BOLOSENSE
Bolo Sense is a protective device that combines an ultrasonic sensor with a vibration motor, enabling people with vision impairment to detect obstacles above chest level. The sensor detects obstacles ahead and vibrates to alert the user of potential danger, enhancing safety and situational awareness in various environments.
Protective Device for Visual Impairments
problem statment
White Canes and Guide Dogs help visually impaired individuals detect obstacles below chest level but fail to address dangers above, like low-hanging branches or open cabinets. This gap exposes users to potential injuries, highlighting the need for a solution to detect overhead obstacles and enhance safety.
design development
The designs were developed with attention to stability during use, ease of calibration, and the optimal angle and distance of the ultrasonic sensor. All three were designed and engineered with production in mind.
Third design incorporates a bolo tie mechanism for enhanced stability while doubling as a stylish accessory. The adjustable buckle at the back allows to easily calibrate the product’s placement for comfort and functionality.

selected design
The bolo tie form stood out among the three designs due to its superior stability and ease of calibration, making it the most suitable choice for my user scenario.
final prototype
From the selected design, iterations were made, expanding the back surface for improved stability during movement and rotating the sensor to a portrait orientation for better performance.
